Nov 04 (Field Level Media) – The Athletics named Cam Castro as their new general manager on Wednesday.
Castro served as the senior vice president of player development and performance with the 2026 World Series champion Milwaukee Brewers.
He will work under Taylor Smith, the Athletics’ new president of baseball operations. Smith, 31, was hired on Oct. 19 after spending the past two seasons as senior vice president and assistant general manager for the Boston Red Sox.
“Cam will be an awesome addition to the front office and a great partner to me in running this organization,” Smith said. “He has experiences and skillsets that will complement me and the very talented people that we already have in the organization. He’s one of the best development minds in the game with a proven track record of building the systems and processes that develop a winner.”
Castro was the baseball coach for Division II Lake Erie College before being hired by the Brewers as a pitching coach at Class-A Carolina in 2019. He was named minor league pitching coordinator the following year and director of pitching development ahead of the 2022 season before being promoted to his most recent post following the 2024 season.
“I’m beyond thankful to (principal owner) John Fisher, Taylor Smith, (finance director) Ross Bowen and the entire Athletics organization for this opportunity,” Castro said. “The A’s are a historic franchise with an incredible legacy. I look forward to being a part of the next chapter of A’s baseball and developing a team, culture, and organization that our fans will be proud of.”
Castro effectively will take the place of former general manager David Forst. The team mutually parted ways with Forst in August after he had been in the role since 2015. Assistant GM Dan Feinstein assumed the spot in an interim capacity for the rest of the season.
Under the watch of Smith and Castro, the A’s plan to play their final season in West Sacramento, Calif., in 2027 before moving to Las Vegas in 2028.
The Athletics were 64-98 in 2026, their fifth straight losing season. The team hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2020.
